Designer Janeke van der Walt presents collection in New York — TimesLIVE
South African designer Janeke van der Walt presented clothing from her Janeke Luxueuse brand on a runway in New York, United States, for the first time. The collection was shown on September 11 at Runway 7 at Sony Hall, an independent fashion event held alongside the official New York Fashion Week program.
A collection with personal motifs
The brand’s founder and chief designer said she created the collection under the influence of vintage elegance, her own life and childhood memories. In particular, she was inspired by her mother’s style, confidence and manner of carrying herself. According to van der Walt, each look in the collection reflects a particular part of her life, personal development and periods she has gone through.
The collection primarily uses 100% cotton and cashmere, as well as satin, pearls and an original polka-dot print on cotton fabric. The designer was born in Port Elizabeth, now Gqeberha, and her brand is based in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

Production in Stellenbosch
All Janeke Luxueuse items are made to order at a studio in Stellenbosch. The designer works with three women from communities in Cape Town and Stellenbosch, whom she trained to sew clothing in line with the brand’s standards. Van der Walt said this work creates employment in local communities and that the workers receive above-average pay.
She also noted that she sought to restore a sense of timeless elegance for audiences and create clothing in which women would feel beautiful, confident and strong. TimesLIVE reports on the brand’s debut on a New York runway.
