Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón to produce Ravenloft series
According to Mexico News Daily, Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón will become an executive producer of the live-action Ravenloft series set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. He will work on the project through the London-based company Esperanto Filmoj, which he co-founded in 2002.
The series will tell the story of Strahd von Zarovich’s transformation into an evil Darklord — a vampire who rules Barovia. Cuarón is 64 years old.
The world of Barovia
Ravenloft was first introduced in 1983 as one of the most famous settings of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing game. Barovia is a mist-shrouded world of gothic horror, where Strahd is both a tyrant and a prisoner of his own domain.

The screenplay is being written by John August. His co-writing credits include five Tim Burton films, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride and Dark Shadows.
Return to Netflix
The new project will mark Cuarón’s return to Netflix after the film Roma, which the service released in late 2018 following a brief theatrical run. The film won three Academy Awards — for directing, cinematography and best foreign-language film.
Ravenloft is not connected to the previously announced Netflix series The Forgotten Realms, whose development was discontinued. Netflix has not yet announced the cast, director, production start date or premiere date of the new series.
