New film featuring Sandler’s daughter released on Netflix — Jerusalem Post
Israel’s Jerusalem Post published a column by Brian Blum about the film Don’t Say Good Luck, available on Netflix. One of the film’s producers is Adam Sandler, while the leading role is played by his daughter, Sunny Sandler.
The film’s main character, high school student Sophie, gets the leading role in the musical Waitress. Her mother Elizabeth, played by Melanie Lynskey, has cancer at a stage when treatment is no longer possible. The parents try not to tell Sophie and her twin brothers about it, but the girl accidentally overhears a doctor’s conversation with her parents.
Film plot
Sophie tries to balance teenage life, rehearsals and relationships with her peers with her desire to be close to her mother, whose condition is worsening. Blum called Don’t Say Good Luck a touching coming-of-age story and praised the screenplay, acting, music by Sara Bareilles and the film’s runtime of about an hour and a half.

In one episode, Sophie’s brother asks his mother whether the family will go to the house by the sea in the summer. Elizabeth answers affirmatively. The film’s title is connected to a scene in which Sophie asks her mother not to wish her good luck before an audition for a role in the musical.
The author’s personal response
Blum wrote that the plot affected him especially because of his own experience of fighting cancer. According to him, CAR-T treatment stopped the cancer last year, but he later faced other health problems, including severe wasting. Because of this, doctors prescribed intravenous nutrition for him.
The author noted that he currently does not have cancer, but continues to reflect on quality of life, recovery and time with his children, friends and family. Watching the film, he said, strengthened his desire to live.
