Taiwan Academy in Houston to hold cultural events this fall
The Taiwan Academy in Houston, United States, will hold a series of art and cultural events this fall featuring Taiwanese artists, a Hong Kong writer, and a Malaysian-born director working in Taiwan. The program, provisionally titled “Taiwan Sensibility in Texas,” will run until November in cooperation with the state’s art institutions and universities, Taipei Times reports.
Film screenings and a performance by Nymphia Wind
As part of the program, five films by directors Hou Hsiao-hsien, Ang Lee, and Tsai Ming-liang — a Malaysian-born director based in Taiwan — will be screened.
On September 24, drag artist Nymphia Wind will perform at the city’s Museum of Fine Arts. She will speak about her formative years in Taiwan, her early exposure to performing arts, her studies in theater and movement, and how she uses performances and civic engagement to express her identity.

In December 2024, Nymphia Wind became the first recipient of the Changemaker of the Year award from the Harvard Undergraduate Foreign Policy Initiative.
Literature and music
Hong Kong writer Gigi L. Leung will also take part in the program. Her work “Daily Movement” has received several distinctions in Taiwan’s literary community. After completing the U.S. leg of her book tour, she will participate in lectures and discussions with scholars at the University of St. Thomas in Houston.
On November 21, vibraphonist Su Yuhan and her jazz trio will perform music from the album Over the Moons at the Asia Society Texas Center. Pianist Lu Yizhi will also visit several Texas universities with the concert series “Connecting Horizons: From Taiwan to Texas — Crossing Oceans Through the Power of Music.”
