Lucas Museum designed by Ma Yansong opens in Los Angeles — ECNS

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, designed by Chinese architect Ma Yansong and his team, opened to visitors in Los Angeles, United States, on Tuesday. ECNS reports.

Collection and founders

The museum was founded by Star Wars director George Lucas and his wife Mellody Hobson. The institution covers about 28,000 square metres, and its collection includes more than 40,000 artworks and artefacts.

Architectural concept

In 2014, MAD Architects won an international competition for the museum’s design, surpassing, among others, Zaha Hadid and Rem Koolhaas. The building resembles a massive white structure that appears to hover above trees and park space.

According to the architect, the design was inspired by traditional Chinese gardens and the idea of harmony between people and nature. Ma Yansong also referred to the concept of “landscape cities,” proposed in the 1990s by Chinese scholar Qian Xuesen. It envisages closer harmony among cities, nature and culture.

Ma Yansong described the combination of tradition and innovation as an important challenge for contemporary architecture. In his view, traditional Chinese gardens offer ideas for creating spaces where people and nature can coexist harmoniously.
