South Africa’s Daily Maverick publishes an excerpt from the final book about Spud Milton
In South Africa, Daily Maverick published an excerpt from John van de Ruit’s book Spud: Two for the Road, the sixth and final installment of the story about Spud Milton. The events of the excerpt take place in 2004, when the protagonist is trying to succeed in an acting career and, together with his creative partner Glenn Fox, is planning the satirical comedy sketch show Viper.
Working as clowns and theatre plans
The excerpt begins on New Year’s Eve, when Spud and Fox agree to take up Viper again. At the same time, both work as clowns to improve their financial situation. The characters conclude that their temporary work has become an obstacle to their creative plans and decide to quit.
However, Spud and Fox learn that they must give their employer one month’s notice, so they will remain at work until the end of February. They have already submitted an application for Viper to take part in the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown and are awaiting a decision on whether the show will be included in the festival programme.

Dark Star Wellness company
Another storyline concerns the company Dark Star Wellness, linked to an acquaintance of the protagonist nicknamed Rambo. Spud suspects that the shareholder scheme may be a financial pyramid, although he admits in the excerpt that he has no proof of this. His father supports the investment idea and, without his son’s knowledge, sends Rambo a letter asking for more information.
After receiving information about a $10,000 bonus for each shareholder, Spud’s father agrees to register as a shareholder without purchasing shares. Under the arrangement, all payments from Dark Star Wellness are to be transferred to his account for immediate reinvestment.
