Singapore dietitian advises finishing dinner 2–3 hours before sleep

In Singapore, dietitian Wong Hui Mei advises finishing dinner at least two to three hours before sleep and avoiding large portions immediately before resting. As Channel NewsAsia reports, there is no universal time after which dinner becomes too late: it depends on a person’s sleep schedule and daily routine.

According to senior dietitian Sow Bao Yin of Ng Teng Fong Hospital, the body’s internal clock affects insulin secretion, tissue sensitivity to it, and hormones linked to hunger and satiety. In the morning, the pancreas produces insulin most effectively and muscles absorb glucose more efficiently; by evening, these functions decline.

Late dinner and glucose

Sow Bao Yin noted that studies involving identical meals served earlier or later in the day have linked late eating to poorer glucose control, higher triglyceride levels and changes in fat tissue that promote fat accumulation.

In a 2025 study, 20 healthy young people ate the same dinner at 18:00 and at 22:00. A team from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine found that after the late dinner, participants had higher blood sugar levels and a lower ability to process fat. The result did not depend on whether participants went to bed immediately after eating or waited before sleeping.

A 2022 study linked this effect to melatonin, whose levels rise in the evening. Professor Frank Scheer of Brigham and Women’s Hospital explained that higher levels of this hormone may interfere with glucose regulation and lead to higher and more prolonged spikes in its level after meals.

Meal timing does not replace diet

Dietitians stress that total calorie intake, food quality and physical activity remain important for weight control. Dietitian Jaclyn Reutens of Aptima Nutrition noted that sustained weight loss requires a long-term energy deficit, rather than merely changing the timing of one dinner.

A late dinner can intensify hunger and increase the risk of overeating because a person goes without food for longer. If hunger occurs during the day, specialists advise choosing a small nutritious snack, such as fruit, a handful of roasted nuts, milk or an unsweetened soy drink.

What to do when dinner is late

A single late dinner is unlikely on its own to determine weight or overall health. More important factors are the frequency of such meals, portion size and food choices. For a late meal, experts advise choosing steamed, boiled, baked or grilled dishes, or soups, and limiting fried foods, sauces and sweet drinks.

In the evening, it is also recommended to avoid alcohol, carbonated, caffeinated and sweetened drinks, as they may disrupt sleep, worsen reflux symptoms and affect glucose control. If a late dinner is planned, a light snack after lunch can be included to avoid sitting down to eat overly hungry.
