Livestock grazing has been restricted in the Odesa region due to a smallpox outbreak in Romania

Livestock grazing has been restricted in the Odesa region due to a smallpox outbreak in Romania

In the Izmail District of the Odesa Region, anti-epizootic measures have been stepped up due to the spread of sheep and goat pox in Romania. As of October 6, grazing of livestock has been banned in the 10-kilometer border zone.

This was reported by the Main Directorate of the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection in the Odesa region.

As noted, the outbreak of sheep and goat pox in Romania began in 2025 as a localized problem, but the disease spread significantly in 2026. Romanian authorities are identifying numerous outbreaks and implementing quarantine measures, including the culling of infected and exposed animals.

In the Izmail District, the situation is considered an immediate threat due to its proximity to the Romanian county of Tulcea.

A 10-kilometer strip along the state border with Romania has been designated as a high-risk area. This zone includes Izmail, Reni, Kiliya, and Vylkove, as well as a number of villages, local hunting and fishing enterprises, and the territory of the Danube Biosphere Reserve.

Local authorities have been ordered to ban livestock grazing in this zone. Veterinary specialists must conduct a census of all sheep and goats in the Izmail district by October 8.

Police and border guards have been instructed to step up controls on highways and at the state border. At seaports, operators must install disinfection mats and comply with additional veterinary and sanitary requirements.

The restrictions will remain in effect until the epizootic situation stabilizes. They are to be lifted by a separate decision of the Emergency Anti-Epizootic Commission under the Izmail District State Administration.
