In the United States, the number of private-sector jobs increased by 90,000 in September. According to CNBC, citing payroll processing company ADP, the figure exceeded the Dow Jones consensus forecast of 68,000 jobs. It was also higher than the downwardly revised August figure of 36,000.

Service providers added 59,000 jobs, while goods producers added 31,000.

Industries with employment growth

The largest number of new workers was hired in education and health services, which added 55,000 jobs. Employment in leisure and hospitality rose by 22,000, in manufacturing by 17,000, and in construction by 15,000.

The largest employment increase was recorded in the northeastern United States, where 56,000 jobs were added. Among companies by size, businesses with 50 to 499 employees posted the biggest increase, adding 54,000 jobs.

Job cuts and pay

At the same time, employment in financial activities declined by 16,000. Professional and business services lost 11,000 positions, while the natural resources and mining sector lost 1,000.

Base pay was 3.2% higher than a year earlier, while gross pay rose by 4.7%. ADP Chief Economist Nela Richardson called the report strong and said that job creation had rebounded after a three-month slowdown, while wage growth remained stable.

The ADP report was released ahead of the publication of US Bureau of Labor Statistics data on nonfarm employment. Wall Street analysts expected the figure to rise by 84,000 after an increase of 162,000 a month earlier, while the unemployment rate was expected to stand at 4.1%.
