Elise Mertens knocks Jelena Ostapenko out of WTA 1000 in Beijing — Interia Sport
Belgian tennis player Elise Mertens defeated Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko in the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing, China. The match on the Moon court ended 6:2, 3:6, 6:3. Thanks to this victory, Mertens advanced to the fourth round, Interia Sport reports.
Match progress
Mertens started the match confidently and won the first set 6:2. In the second set, Ostapenko managed to turn the match around: the Latvian secured a break, took a 4:2 lead, maintained her advantage and levelled the score in sets at 6:3.
In the deciding set, Ostapenko also took a 2:0 lead but failed to retain her advantage. Mertens fought back and ultimately did not allow her opponent to win another game before the end of the match. The Belgian closed out the third set 6:3.

Mertens’ opponent in the fourth round
In the fourth round, Mertens will face the winner of the match between Coco Gauff and Xinran Sun. Thus, a potential meeting between Gauff and Ostapenko at this stage of the tournament will not take place.
Iga Świątek had earlier advanced to the fourth round after a comeback victory over Donna Vekić, 4:6, 7:6(0), 6:2. Her next opponent will be 10th seed Iva Jovic. One of the players from the Świątek—Jovic and Mertens—Gauff or Sun pairings will play in the quarter-finals of the tournament in Beijing.
