Iva Jovic defeats Alexandra Eala in the United States to reach US Open fourth round

American tennis player Iva Jovic defeated Filipina Alexandra Eala in the third round of the US Open in New York, United States, on September 5. The match at Arthur Ashe Stadium lasted three hours and ended 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

Third victory over Eala

Jovic won a tense first set, but Eala responded in the second set and took the match into a deciding set. In the third set, the initiative changed hands several times, but the 18-year-old American ultimately saw out the victory. As Channel NewsAsia reports, Jovic's head-to-head record against Eala is now 3-0.

Match against Gauff in the fourth round

Jovic and Eala, who are close friends, had already taken to the court together in New York during Fan Week. They then played a casual doubles match alongside their parents. For Jovic, this result marked her first appearance in the fourth round of the US Open: in her two previous appearances at the tournament, she did not advance beyond the second round.

Jovic, who is ranked 14th in the world — the highest ranking of her career — will face fourth-seeded American Coco Gauff in the fourth round. Earlier the same day, Gauff defeated Spain's Cristina Bucsa.
