Michael Carrick becomes permanent Manchester United manager
In the United Kingdom, former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has become the club’s permanent head coach after serving in an interim capacity. He led the team into European competition by finishing third in the English championship behind Arsenal and Manchester City, Daily Maverick reports.
Manchester United have returned to the Champions League for the first time in nearly three years. The club last played in Europe’s premier competition in December 2023, when it lost 0-1 to Bayern and was eliminated in the group stage. The team then finished last in a group with Copenhagen and Galatasaray, recording one win, one draw and four defeats.
Coaching changes
During the 2023 campaign, the team was coached by Erik ten Hag. Ruben Amorim later took charge of the club, but left the post in January 2026 after 14 months in the role. Carrick, who had been an interim manager before the appointment, then took charge of the team on a permanent basis.

In the previous season, United did not play in UEFA competitions and competed only in domestic tournaments. The team was eliminated in its opening English League Cup match and later also exited the FA Cup.
Champions League and Carrick’s experience
In the league phase of the Champions League, Manchester United will host Sabah, Roma, RB Leipzig and Bayern. In away matches, the team will play against Atletico, Como, Sporting and Villarreal.
Carrick made 464 appearances for Manchester United. As a player, he won five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two English League Cups, the Europa League and the 2007/08 Champions League with the club. He also served as the team’s interim manager in 2021. Carrick said that his experience at the club would help the players meet the established standards.
