Malawi and Cameroon will face off in the final of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations

The national teams of Malawi and Cameroon will face off in Rabat on Sunday, August 16, in the final of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Both teams have a chance to win their first continental title, according to France 24.

Sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chavinga have been key players for the Malawi national team in the tournament. The team scored 12 goals on its way to the final: Temwa Chavinga, who plays for Kansas City Current, scored five times, while Tabitha Chavinga of Lyon scored four times. In three of their five matches, Malawi scored three goals each—against Nigeria, Egypt, and Algeria.

Temwa Chavinga called reaching the final an incredible achievement and noted that the team’s victories mean a lot to the people of Malawi. She emphasized that the sisters are just part of a talented national team. Tabitha Chavinga also highlighted the role of her teammates and noted that success is only possible when all the players perform at their best.

In the final, Cameroon will rely, in particular, on goalkeeper Michaela Bigin of Portugal’s Benfica. In the semifinal against Morocco, the 22-year-old goalkeeper saved four penalty kicks: one in extra time and three more in the penalty shootout. In five tournament matches, the Cameroonian team has conceded only two goals.

The Malawi national team is ranked 153rd in the world—82 spots below Cameroon. The Malawian team will be without midfielder Rose Kadzere, who scored two goals in the tournament and was sent off in the semifinal against Algeria. She is serving an automatic suspension.

The winners of the final will receive a record $2 million in prize money, while the runners-up will receive $750,000. The third-place match between Morocco and Algeria will take place on Saturday.
