Muchova and Mensik win mixed doubles title at US Open
Czech tennis players Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik won the mixed doubles tournament at the US Open. In the final on Arthur Ashe Stadium court, they defeated Switzerland's Belinda Bencic and Italy's Flavio Cobolli 6:3, 1:6, 10:6.
As Channel NewsAsia reports, citing Reuters, this is Muchova and Mensik's first Grand Slam trophy together.
How the final unfolded
The Czech pair quickly won the first set. Mensik finished it with an ace on set point in less than 30 minutes. In the second set, Bencic broke serve and put her team ahead 3:1. Later, the Swiss player levelled the match in sets when her forehand clipped the net and went over Muchova.

The winner was decided in a championship tiebreak to 10 points. Mensik's powerful serve and his play at the net helped the Czech pair seize the initiative. The 20-year-old player extended the lead to 8:4 with a precise volley, after which Muchova earned match points on her serve. Mensik ended the match with another ace.
Road to the title
In the semi-finals, Muchova and Mensik saved two match points in their match against Russians Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev and advanced to the decisive match. During the award ceremony, Muchova joked that the matching burgundy Adidas jackets worn by the pair might have played a decisive role. She also said that the players had come primarily to enjoy playing mixed doubles.
The mixed doubles draw consisted of 16 teams and began on Tuesday. This is the second year of the updated competition format, which involves leading singles players and is intended to attract more spectators in the week before the start of the main singles draw.
