Nigerian athlete Amusan finishes second at tournament in Budapest
Nigerian athlete Tobi Amusan took second place in the women’s 100-metre hurdles at the debut World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary. In the final on September 11, she recorded 12.34 seconds and earned $75,000.
American Olympic champion Masai Russell won with a time of 12.22 seconds. According to Premium Times Nigeria, Russell earlier set a world record in Zurich in 2026, covering the distance in 12.09 seconds.
Amusan’s performance
Amusan reached the final after finishing second in her semifinal heat, where she recorded 12.49 seconds. Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas was first then with a time of 12.45 seconds.

Before the competition, Amusan had the second-best result in the world this season, 12.23 seconds. Shortly before arriving in Budapest, she finished fourth in the Diamond League final in Brussels, where Russell also competed.
Other Nigerian results
Another Nigerian representative, Ella Onojuvwevwo, did not advance to the final of the 400 metres. She finished sixth in the semifinal with a time of 50.50 seconds. The race was won by Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic in 49.58 seconds, while Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain finished second in 49.67 seconds.
The Ultimate Championship runs from September 11 to 13 at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest. It is a new biennial World Athletics tournament featuring around 400 athletes; the programme includes 26 individual events and two mixed relays. The total prize fund is $10 million, and winners of individual events receive $150,000 each.
