Maguchikh's Russian rival failed to advance to the 2026 European Championship final

Yelena Kulichenko, competing for Cyprus, was unable to challenge Yaroslava Mahuchikh in the final of the 2026 European High Jump Championships.

The 24-year-old athlete cleared only 1.88 m and finished in 10th place. In the qualifying round, Kulichenko cleared 1.91 m without any mistakes and advanced to the final among the top contenders.

Ukrainian track and field athlete Yaroslava Mahuchikh won gold in the high jump at the 2026 European Championships in Birmingham.

Maguchikh cleared the bar at 1.97 m, outperforming all her rivals. Iryna Herashchenko took fifth place with a jump of 1.92 m.

Ukraine’s top-ranked tennis player, Elina Svitolina, fell just short of the final at the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto. In a tense semifinal, the Ukrainian lost in three sets to former world No. 1 Iga Świątek of Poland.

As a reminder, on August 11, Elina Svitolina defeated Russia’s Katerina Aleksandrova in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 in Toronto and advanced to the semifinals. The Ukrainian lost the first set but staged a comeback to win the match in three sets—3–6, 6–0, 6–3.

Prior to that, Ukraine’s top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina, secured a victory in the round of 16 at the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament being held in Toronto.
