Serhiy Rebrov may become the head coach of the Hungarian national team

The Hungarian national team got off to a poor start in the new Nations League campaign, prompting talk in the country about a possible change in head coach. Following a loss to Ukraine and a scoreless draw with Northern Ireland, the future of Italian coach Marco Rossi has been called into question.

Among the candidates for the position of the Hungarian national team’s new head coach is, surprisingly, former Ukraine national team head coach Serhiy Rebrov, who is currently unemployed following his resignation.

Personnel changes in the Hungarian national team may have been brewing for quite some time. The team was relegated from Division A of the Nations League and subsequently failed to qualify for the World Cup, despite having high ambitions.

The start of the new Nations League season only increased the pressure on Marco Rossi. In their first match, Hungary lost to Ukraine at home, and in their second match, they were unable to score against Northern Ireland—the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

After two rounds, the Hungarians found themselves in a difficult position in the standings and risk having to play in relegation playoffs to remain in the league.

Although Marco Rossi has a contract with the Hungarian Football Federation that runs through 2030, his future as head coach remains uncertain.

Rossi himself has stated that sometimes a crisis can only be overcome through personnel changes.

Should Marco Rossi step down, Serhiy Rebrov is considered one of the leading candidates to replace him.

The Ukrainian coach has a good reputation in Hungary thanks to his work with Ferencváros. Under his leadership, the club won the Hungarian championship three times in a row and returned to the Champions League group stage.

Rebrov led Ferencváros from 2018 to 2021 and left a lasting mark on the club’s history.

Hungary’s interest in Serhiy Rebrov may be linked not only to his successful tenure at Ferencváros.

In May, after being dismissed from the Ukrainian national team, Rebrov met with the leadership of the Hungarian Football Federation. During the talks, the parties discussed possible cooperation.

The Ukrainian coach’s agent, Sándor Varga, could also play an important role in a potential appointment. He is Hungarian and was born in Transcarpathia.

Thus, Rebrov is well acquainted with Hungarian soccer, and his candidacy could be considered should a decision be made to replace the national team’s head coach.

If there is indeed a coaching change with the Hungarian national team, Serhiy Rebrov may have the opportunity to face his former team very soon.

As early as October 5 in Trnava, Slovakia, the Hungarian national team could play under Rebrov’s leadership against Ukraine, a team the Ukrainian coach previously led.

At the same time, no final decision has yet been made regarding Marco Rossi’s resignation and Serhiy Rebrov’s appointment. His candidacy remains one of the possible scenarios following Hungary’s unsuccessful start in the Nations League.

Earlier, former Ukraine national team head coach Serhiy Rebrov responded to a video showing him playing padel with former Russian national team defender Vasyl Berezutskyi. The Ukrainian coach stated that he was unaware of Berezutskyi’s return to work in Russia and apologized to the fans.
