Svitolina failed to reach the final of the WTA 1000 in Toronto
Ukraine's top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina, fell just short of the final at the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto.
In a tense semifinal, the Ukrainian lost in three sets to former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland.

The Polish player took the first set, winning 6:3.
In the second set, Svitolina responded decisively: the Ukrainian conceded only one game to her opponent and won the set 6–1, forcing the match into a decisive third set.
In the third set, Svitolina broke serve first and took a 3–2 lead. However, Swiatek then seized the initiative, won four games in a row, and closed out the match in her favor.
Despite the loss, Svitolina is having one of her most successful seasons in recent years. In Toronto, she racked up four consecutive wins and, before the semifinals, defeated Ekaterina Aleksandrova in three sets.
In 2026, the Ukrainian has already won the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome and has also performed strongly at other major tournaments. In Toronto, she reached the semifinals.
For Swiatek, reaching the final marked her first final of the 2026 season. In the tournament’s final, she will face Elena Rybakina, who defeated Coco Gauff in the other semifinal, 5–7, 6–2, 6–2.
The Ukrainian’s next tournament will be the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati. Svitolina has been seeded and will begin her campaign in the second round. Her opponent will be determined following the first round.
As a reminder, on August 11, Elina Svitolina defeated Russia’s Katerina Aleksandrova in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 in Toronto and advanced to the semifinals. The Ukrainian lost the first set but staged a comeback to win the match in three sets—3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Prior to that, Ukraine’s top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina, secured a victory in the round of 16 at the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament being held in Toronto.
