Svitolina advanced to the third round of the WTA 1000

Elina Svitolina advanced to the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto. In a tough match, the Ukrainian defeated Spain’s Jessica Buzas Maneiro 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. The match lasted nearly three hours, and Svitolina clinched the victory after three tense sets.

The match got off to a rocky start for the Ukrainian. The opponents exchanged breaks, after which Buzas Manero managed to take a 3–1 lead. Svitolina didn’t let the Spaniard hold onto her lead for long. She fought back and began dictating the pace of the match herself. Ultimately, the first set went to a tiebreak.

There, Buzas Maneiro earned four set points in a row. The Ukrainian tried to turn the tide of the set, but the Spaniard ultimately capitalized on her opportunity and took the set. The score after the first set was 7–6 in favor of Buzas Maneiro.

In the second set, Elina fought back

The second set again started off poorly for Svitolina. The Ukrainian was down 1–3 but managed to get back into the match. Elina evened the score and once again took the set to a tiebreak. This time, the Ukrainian tennis player prevailed in the tense finish.

Svitolina also didn’t close out the set right away. She had four set points but couldn’t seal the deal. However, on her fifth attempt, the Ukrainian put pressure on her opponent and evened the match. The second set went to Svitolina, 7–6.

In the third set, Svitolina nearly let the victory slip away

In the decisive set, the Ukrainian finally gained a significant lead. Svitolina took a 5–0 lead, and it seemed the match was all but over. But Buzas Maneiro didn’t give up. The Spaniard managed to close the gap and put Svitolina in a tough spot at the most crucial moment of the match.

But the Ukrainian held on to her lead. In the decisive game, Svitolina managed to break serve and closed out the third set 6–4. As a result, Elina won in three sets and advanced to the third round of the tournament in Toronto.

Many errors on serve

Neither player had their best match on serve. Svitolina had only three aces but as many as 11 double faults. Buzas Maneiro hit just one ace. Meanwhile, the Spaniard committed 15 double faults.

The Ukrainian saved 6 of her opponent’s 14 break points. Buzas Maneiro, for her part, converted 3 of 12 break points on Svitolina’s serve. At the same time, Elina converted 9 of her 12 break points. For the Spaniard, that figure was 8 out of 14. In other words, the match was very tense and featured a large number of errors on both sides. But at the decisive moments, Svitolina proved to be the stronger player.

Who Will Svitolina Face Next?

In the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto, the Ukrainian will face the winner of the match between Romania’s Gabriela Ruse and Austria’s Anastasia Potapova. For Svitolina, this is already her second consecutive tough match at the tournament. The Ukrainian managed to advance despite a poor start to the match and secure the victory after nearly three hours of battle.
