Tuchel explains defensive substitutions after England’s defeat — Dawn

In the United Kingdom, England national team head coach Thomas Tuchel explained the defensive substitutions in the lost World Cup semi-final against Argentina. According to him, towards the end of the match, the team did not control the ball and could not defend properly in a 4-4-2 formation.

As Dawn reports, England were leading after a goal by Anthony Gordon, but late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez gave Argentina a 2-1 victory. England failed to reach their first World Cup final since 1966.

The decision to switch to defence

Tuchel was criticised for making several defensive substitutions in the second half, after which England conceded the initiative to their opponents. The coach said he considered the changes necessary because Argentina were strengthening their attack in an attempt to equalise.

According to Tuchel, his decision was also influenced by the fatigue of England’s players and the team’s previous success in matches against Mexico and Norway, when it defended with five defenders. He noted that the decisive moment was Argentina’s major scoring opportunity before the water break.

Nations League matches

Tuchel is preparing to announce the England squad for its first matches after the end of its World Cup campaign. The team will face Spain, Croatia and the Czech Republic in the Nations League.

The German specialist, who previously worked with Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern, said that he made the substitutions not for his own ego, but to help the team.
