Australia’s women’s rugby team, the Wallaroos, defeated Scotland 30:10 in a WXV Global Series test match in Edinburgh, Scotland, ending a run of six consecutive defeats. As ABC News Australia reports, it was Australia’s first test-match victory since March.

Second-half surge

The first half belonged to the hosts, with Scotland taking a 10:5 lead into the break. Desiree Miller scored the Wallaroos’ only try before half-time. In the second half, the Australian team increased its intensity and scored 25 unanswered points.

Samantha Wood, Brianna Hoy and player of the match Faitala Moleka each scored a try. The Wallaroos scored three tries in the second half within seven minutes. Hoy’s and Moleka’s tries came while Scotland were a player down after Evie Gallagher received a yellow card.

Wood also made two conversions and kicked two penalties, scoring 15 points in total. Wallaroos captain Siokapesi Palu Sekona said after the match that the team had many areas to improve, although it could take positives from the win.

The team prepares for new matches

Palu Sekona said the Australians had taken lessons from their previous match against France, which they lost 26:29. In that game, the Wallaroos led 19:0, while the French team at one point was reduced to 11 players because of a red card and yellow cards.

Acting head coach Tim Walsh was critical of the team’s first-half performance against Scotland. According to him, the coaching staff spoke sternly to the players at half-time, while the Wallaroos’ advantage was secured by the wind in the second half and the performances of several key players.

Next month, the Wallaroos will play Scotland again — on October 17 in Sydney and October 23 in Canberra. Walsh said the team would not have a lighter training regime over the next three weeks.
