Wladimir Klitschko attended the finals of the European Boxing Championships

Wladimir Klitschko arrived in Sofia, where the European Boxing Championships finals are being held. The former world champion was a special guest at the tournament and took part in the awards ceremony for athletes with Down syndrome.

 

Vladimir Klitschko visited Sofia for the finals of the European Boxing Championships. The Ukrainian boxer served as a special guest at the continental championship, which is taking place in the Bulgarian capital. The Bulgarian Boxing Federation announced Klitschko’s arrival. The organization published a photo of the Ukrainian alongside Federation President Krasimir Ininski. “Ladies and gentlemen, Wladimir Klitschko is in Sofia for the finals,” the Bulgarian federation wrote.

Klitschko also took part in the awards ceremony for athletes with Down syndrome. The Ukrainian personally presented medals to the participants of the competitions held as part of the European Championships. For Volodymyr Klitschko, this is one of his public appearances in the boxing community since the end of his professional career. For many years, the Ukrainian remained one of the most famous figures in world boxing and fought 69 bouts in the professional ring.

Klitschko won 64 of those bouts, 53 of which ended in knockouts. He lost five fights. Klitschko fought his last professional bout in 2017. He faced British boxer Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium in London and lost by technical knockout in the eleventh round.

Now Klitschko continues to appear at major boxing events as a special guest. His visit to Sofia has attracted the attention of both tournament organizers and fans. The World Boxing-sanctioned European Amateur Boxing Championships are taking place in Sofia from September 15 to 26. Medals are being contested in 20 weight classes for both men and women.

Ukraine has already won two medals at the tournament. Iryna Lutsak won a bronze medal. Pavlo Illusha brought home another bronze for the Ukrainian team. He competed in the under-80-kilogram weight class and reached the semifinals. In the battle for a spot in the final, Illush faced Serbian Rastko Simic. The Ukrainian lost to his opponent and thus finished his run at the European Championships with a bronze medal.

Thus, the Ukrainian team already has two medals at the continental championship. The tournament in Sofia will continue until September 26, so Ukrainian boxers still have a chance to add to the team’s medal tally.
