The Gambian national team declined to play a friendly match against the Russian national team in March of this year due to logistical difficulties.
This was announced by Lamin Bayo, president of the Gambia Football Federation.
According to him, the Gambians received an offer to play against the Russian national team but were unable to accept it due to another scheduled match.
“We received an offer to play against the Russian national team in March of this year. But due to a scheduled away match against Senegal, it would have been problematic for us to play against the Russian national team in Russia. Therefore, due to logistical issues, we declined,” Bayo noted.
Following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian clubs and the national team have been suspended from international tournaments. Specifically, the team missed the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024 and will not participate in the 2026 World Cup, as well as in the current Nations League campaign.
As a reminder, Dynamo loaned Rubchynskyi to Karpaty.
Iran has also withdrawn from the 2026 World Cup.
