Alibaba Group Holding announced that its open-source AI model, Qwen, has been downloaded more than 3 billion times worldwide over the past six months. The company believes this figure surpasses the results of Meta, Google, and Chinese competitors, making Qwen the leader among open-source AI models.
According to Fortune, Alibaba has made the source code for over 460 models in the Qwen family publicly available, and more than 300,000 derivative models have been created within its ecosystem. These models can be downloaded, customized, and used as a foundation for new AI-powered products.

According to a report by the Hugging Face platform on the state of open-source models, published on August 14, Google’s models had 418 million downloads in 2026, while Meta’s had 227 million. The report cited Alibaba’s data on Qwen as one of the largest foundations of the open AI ecosystem. It also noted that Qwen has become part of the standard workflow for developers selecting models for fine-tuning and deployment.
Alibaba distributes Qwen through its own cloud platform to corporate clients, particularly in Southeast Asia and Africa. The company competes with Chinese developers DeepSeek, Moonshot Kimi, and MiniMax, as well as with American models. According to Fortune, Meta and Nvidia have also released new open-source AI models in recent weeks amid intensifying competition for developers.
