Apple Maps begins showing ads in search results

Apple has begun showing advertisements in the Apple Maps app on iPhone. Ads appear first in the “Suggested Places” section during searches and are also expected to be displayed at the top of search results.

Labelling of advertisements

As The Verge reports, the ads are marked with a blue “ad” badge. This format is similar to the advertising placements that Google has used in its mapping app for many years.

When Maps is launched, users are also shown a notice that local advertising may depend on approximate location, search queries, or the area of the map they are viewing. According to 9to5Mac, ads began appearing this week, and more users in the United States and Canada will see them over the next several weeks.

Apple’s privacy statements

In the app notice, Apple states that advertising information is not linked to an Apple Account. The company had also previously said that a user’s location and the ads they see or interact with in Maps are not associated with their Apple Account.

According to Apple, personal data remains on the user’s device; the company does not collect or store it and does not share it with third parties. In March, Apple said it would allow companies to pay for placement in top positions in Maps.
