ByteDance has signed an agreement with the MPA on copyright protection in AI
The Chinese company ByteDance has reached an agreement with the Motion Picture Association (MPA), a Hollywood trade association, to strengthen copyright protection in its artificial intelligence models for creating videos and images. The agreement covers the Seedance video model and the Seedream image generation model.
The agreement was signed on August 17, several months after the MPA sent ByteDance a cease-and-desist letter regarding certain activities related to these tools. The association’s letter stemmed from concerns that Seedance could generate content featuring copyrighted film and television characters without permission.

In February, Disney and other studios also expressed concerns that AI tools could create content featuring copyrighted characters and the likenesses of celebrities without permission.
ByteDance stated that newer versions of the models feature enhanced intellectual property protection. Seedance and Seedream are available through TikTok, CapCut, and Dreamina, among other platforms. Both sides said they would continue to collaborate on measures to protect copyrighted content as artificial intelligence technologies evolve.
