Discovered Materials Raised $9 Million to Develop Materials for More Energy-Efficient Chips
The startup Discovered Materials has raised $9 million in seed funding to search for new materials that could help create more efficient integrated circuits. The round was led by Lightspeed India Partners; Peak XV Partners and business angels Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram, and Tarik Shihipar also participated, according to TechCrunch.
The company was founded by Adwait Sridhar and Akash Ramdas, and the startup is a Y Combinator alum. Ramdas earned a Ph.D. in materials science from Stanford University. Sridhar previously worked on agents at Persona AI and Luma Labs.
Discovered Materials has developed a software pipeline that uses Anthropic models in a specially configured environment to search for potential materials. The company then applies the fundamental physical models it has trained to run simulations and evaluate the viability of the candidates. According to Sridhar, cloud-based agents operate around the clock and can generate thousands of hypotheses per day. During his doctoral studies, Ramdas, according to the co-founder’s estimate, reviewed approximately 20 such options every day.

The startup also released examples of hundreds of new materials and the Material Discovery Bench—a tool for tracking how state-of-the-art models solve material discovery problems. The company focuses on thermal issues in semiconductor materials: chips performing AI workloads generate heat, causing data centers to consume a lot of electricity and require cooling systems.
Discovered Materials stated that it has already identified several materials whose properties match those of materials used by major chip manufacturers. The company did not disclose any details. At the same time, a material that potentially reduces heating or improves heat dissipation may be too complex for chip production or have poorer electrical characteristics.
If the startup finds promising candidates, it plans to patent the use of such materials in graphics processors or methods for manufacturing chips from them, and then license the developments to manufacturers. Sridhar hopes that within the next year, the company will have materials suitable for patenting. He also acknowledged that it is not possible to speed up the laboratory synthesis and testing of these substances.
