Google is in talks with SpaceX to build orbital data centers
Alphabet and Elon Musk's company have begun discussions on a partnership to launch rockets to deploy artificial intelligence data centers directly in space.
This was reported by the Wall Street Journal.
The orbital infrastructure project is seen as a key step in preparing for SpaceX’s future public stock offering, as building such facilities requires massive investments. In addition to Musk’s company, Google is considering bringing in other rocket operators to implement this technologically complex initiative. Space data centers are expected to enable AI to operate at a new level of speed and security.
This potential partnership signals a shift in Elon Musk’s rhetoric, as he had previously publicly criticized Google regarding its AI developments. Notably, last week another company, Anthropic, already agreed to use the computing power of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 facility. Deploying computing systems in orbit is becoming a new battleground for global tech giants.
Elon Musk is exploring the possibility of taking SpaceX public to raise funds for building data centers in space, which are intended to support artificial intelligence systems.
Starcloud, with support from Nvidia, is preparing to begin mining Bitcoin directly in orbit following the launch of a new satellite this year. This is an important step in the development of space technology and cryptocurrencies.
