Google tests Gemini calls to businesses in the US — The Verge

Google is rolling out early preview access in the United States to a Gemini feature that allows users to task artificial intelligence with calling local businesses. Pixel 11 owners will be able to use it for bookings, checking product availability, or rescheduling a service appointment.

How Gemini works

According to The Verge, users do not need to dial the number themselves. It is enough to ask Gemini to make a call through the Gemini app on a Pixel smartphone.

Google says the AI will call the business, introduce itself, navigate automated voice menus, wait on hold, and speak with an employee. Users will be able to follow a real-time text transcript of the call and take over the conversation at any moment.

Access requirements

The feature is available as an early experiment for paid Gemini subscribers in the United States. Participation also requires using a Pixel 11 and being enrolled in the public beta of Phone by Google.

Last year, Google announced a similar feature called Call for me. It allowed AI to call local businesses to find out whether a needed product was available, but did not allow users to take over the call.
