Apple is expected to add an iPhone Handoff feature to iOS 27, which may allow users to use one phone number on two iPhones and switch between devices. iOS 27 is expected to be released later in September.

Primary and secondary iPhone

As The Verge reports, the feature was briefly mentioned at the WWDC26 conference in June, but no details about how it would work were provided at the time. A demonstration video of the iPhone Handoff setup in the Device Hub environment of Xcode 27 later emerged.

During setup, two iPhones can be paired: one device is designated as the primary one, while the other is designated as a companion. This is expected to allow users to temporarily switch from one phone to another while keeping the same number.

Carrier support

iPhone Handoff will require support from mobile carriers. References to T-Mobile US and Telekom.de were found in the code, but nothing is currently known about support from other carriers.

The Verge also links the possible appearance of the feature to the expected release of the foldable iPhone Ultra. The publication suggests that Handoff may be useful for users who have two devices and want to temporarily use a smaller or cheaper iPhone.
