China launches major solar power plant in Laos

The Chinese company China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) has commissioned the first phase of a 1 GW solar power plant in northern Laos, marking a significant advancement in the country's renewable energy sector.

The project, comprising over 2.2 million solar panels, represents the first large-scale mountainous photovoltaic installation in Laos. The power plant is expected to generate about 1.65 billion kWh annually, reducing coal consumption by 500,000 tons and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 1.3 million tons.

CGN has announced plans to expand clean energy projects in five northern provinces of Laos, as well as in central and southern regions. The launch comes amid rising global oil prices due to instability in the Persian Gulf, which has increased Southeast Asian countries’ interest in renewable energy.

China General Nuclear Power Group is a Chinese energy corporation specializing in nuclear and renewable energy production. It is one of the world’s largest investors in clean energy initiatives.

Overall, the construction of this solar plant not only helps reduce harmful emissions but also strengthens Laos’s and the region’s energy independence, stimulating further development of environmentally friendly technologies.

Looking ahead, further expansion of renewable energy projects in Laos is expected, aligning with global trends toward energy transition and environmental impact reduction.
