AI-induced hiring crisis shakes Indian IT industry

In the first three quarters of the 2025–2026 fiscal year, India’s five largest IT firms—TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech, and Tech Mahindra—increased their workforce by only 17 employees compared to 17,764 in the same period a year earlier. This highlights a structural shift prompted by the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies and evolving market demands.

Artificial intelligence has triggered a hiring crisis: automation is reducing the need for general roles. Additionally, Western clients have frozen or delayed less critical projects, further curbing recruitment.

Demand is moving towards narrowly specialized professionals, such as experts in generative AI (GenAI), cybersecurity, and cloud computing. As a result, companies are adjusting strategies and investments to attract and train specialists in these cutting-edge fields.

The mentioned firms are leaders in India’s IT sector: TCS is the largest IT services company in the country, while Infosys and Wipro are renowned for outsourcing and software development. HCLTech and Tech Mahindra also hold significant global market shares, collectively forming the backbone of the Indian IT industry.

In summary, India’s IT industry faces profound structural changes driven by technological progress and shifting demand trends. These developments will likely continue, requiring companies to remain flexible and focus on specialized skills.

This trend signals a fundamental transformation of the IT labour market, impacting global technology service supply chains and spurring growth in security and AI-related fields. The emphasis on advanced technology professionals is expected to intensify.
