Malta will be the first country in the world to offer its citizens free access to ChatGPT Plus

The Maltese government has announced the launch of a unique national program under which the country’s citizens will receive one year of free access to the premium version of the ChatGPT AI platform.

This was announced in a statement by OpenAI.

To implement this large-scale project, the European country has entered into an official partnership agreement with the American company OpenAI. This is stated in a press release from OpenAI.

The main requirement for receiving a free one-year subscription is successfully completing a specialized educational intensive course.

The country’s government aims to improve the population’s digital literacy and integrate modern technologies into everyday life.

Maltese citizens who complete a special training course developed by the University of Malta will be eligible for a free subscription.

The program covers basic topics related to artificial intelligence, as well as guidelines for the responsible use of such technologies at home and at work.

The organizers have ensured that absolutely all holders of Maltese passports will have access to the latest knowledge, regardless of their current place of residence.

The course will also be available to Maltese citizens living abroad. The program is scheduled to launch in May 2026.

Currently, technical specialists are finalizing the online platform to register the first participants.

The government views this step as a strategic investment in the future of the national economy and human capital.

Silvio Schembri, Minister of Economy, Entrepreneurship, and Strategic Projects, stated that the country does not want its citizens to “fall behind in the digital age.”

This approach will allow Malta to cement its status as one of Europe’s leading digital hubs.

“Malta has become the first country to launch a partnership of this scale. We are putting our citizens at the forefront of global change,” he said.
