OpenAI releases 722 manuscripts with mathematical results — The Verge

OpenAI has released a collection of 722 manuscripts containing mathematical results obtained by an undisclosed advanced artificial intelligence model. The manuscripts cover 372 groups of related results. As The Verge reports, the independent advisory group AGMAI said the publication contains solutions to hundreds of open questions in mathematics.

Details of the release

In September, OpenAI reported that its model had solved more than 100 long-standing open problems in most areas of mathematics. At the time, the company did not specify which problems were involved or when the results would be published.

The current publication includes the manuscripts, as well as a concise account of the model's reasoning, estimates of the computational resources used, and statistics on the number of problems it attempted to solve. OpenAI claims that the average result required an amount of computation equivalent to three hours of ChatGPT Pro's thinking mode.

AGMAI recommendations

AGMAI, or the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, published its first recommendations for AI laboratories at the end of September. The group called for mathematical results to be released promptly and, where possible, published through established academic channels.

AGMAI also advised disclosing, among other things, the name of the model used, prompts, and computing costs. The group urged companies not to use the publication of mathematical results as a marketing tool to promote models, as in its assessment this practice causes significant harm to the mathematical community. OpenAI said it had posted the results in a GitHub repository with rules for reviewing and citing the work.
