OpenAI to begin testing visual ads in ChatGPT in the US this month — The Verge

OpenAI will begin testing a new format of visual advertising in ChatGPT in the United States this month. Sponsored images of goods and services will initially be shown during image generation with the chatbot.

Advertising will be separate from the result

As The Verge reports, visual advertising will be placed separately from the generated image and will not affect ChatGPT’s responses. The company will test the format with an initial group of advertisers.

Subscribers to the ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Enterprise plans will not see ads. Previously, advertising in ChatGPT included a company name, logo and a link to its product in a labeled sponsored block below the chat.

Restrictions for sensitive conversations

OpenAI said it has mechanisms to determine whether a conversation is suitable for displaying ads. Their goal is to prevent ads from appearing in emotionally vulnerable, sensitive or other unsuitable contexts.

The company also said it plans to test new advertising formats in the future. According to The Verge, OpenAI first added advertising to ChatGPT in February.
