OpenAI has launched a separate version of ChatGPT for teenagers

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teens—a separate version of the chatbot designed for users under 18, featuring enhanced built-in safety measures. It combines educational tools with age-appropriate safeguards designed to reduce the risk of teenagers encountering content that is harmful or inappropriate for their development, according to CNBC.

ChatGPT for Teens builds on features that OpenAI has rolled out over the past year. These include Study Mode, which helps students solve problems step by step, an age estimation system, and a range of parental controls.

The new format also includes homework reminders, quizzes, educational visualizations, and the “Study Hours” feature. This feature allows parents or the teens themselves to set the times when Study Mode will be activated by default.

The company stated that teenagers should be able to use artificial intelligence for learning, creativity, and research. At the same time, according to OpenAI, such access must be accompanied by safeguards that take into account users’ developmental stages, support real-world social connections, and promote healthy technology use over time.

The launch comes amid a lawsuit against Meta alleging that the company contributed to the development of addictive behavior in teenagers and children. A class-action lawsuit against Meta was filed in 2023 by a coalition of 29 U.S. state attorneys general.
