Posco deploys robots at its Seoul headquarters — Korea Herald

South Korean steelmaker Posco has introduced robotic systems for building maintenance and visitor services at its Posco Center headquarters in Seoul. In particular, the company has begun using a robot to clean the glass facade of the multistory building. This was reported by Korea Herald.

Posco developed the smart facility management system together with Posco Wide, an affiliated facility management company. Robots have been deployed to wash exterior surfaces and floors, as well as to deliver beverages. The company said it aims to assign dangerous and repetitive tasks to robots so that employees can focus on safer, higher-value work.

Facade-cleaning robot

The facade-washing robot began operating on September 5 after trials on the lower parts of the building. Posco says this is the first use in South Korea of such a device to clean a glass curtain wall facade. According to the company, the technology is expected to reduce risks for workers associated with work at height and improve the consistency of exterior surface cleaning.

The company began testing cleaning robots in March. Over two months, the systems were tested on the facade, in the lobby and in the underground parking lot of Posco Center. In April, company representatives also visited an international cleaning industry exhibition in Shanghai, where they studied technologies and their applications before selecting systems for Posco Center.

Cleaning and visitor services

The lobby-cleaning robot can operate for about three to four hours on a single charge and clean around 990 square meters. The device for the underground parking lot can operate for up to eight hours and clean about 1,980 square meters. Posco said the automation is expected to reduce the physical workload on staff, cut repetitive night work and improve cleaning efficiency.

Three robots were installed in the center's business lounge: two for beverage delivery and one for collecting empty cups. According to the company, they handle about 100 orders per day on average. A robot barista was also installed in the Steel Gallery lounge area on the first floor of the west wing. Posco plans to expand the use of robots for dangerous and repetitive facility management tasks.
