US startup NavigateAI raises $25 million for AI assistants for construction workers

In the United States, NavigateAI, a startup founded by Eric Wu, who previously led Opendoor, has raised $25 million in seed funding. The company develops AI assistants for construction workers and employees in other field-based professions. NavigateAI officially launched in late May, and its post-investment valuation was $225 million, TechCrunch reports.

Smartphones and AI glasses

NavigateAI’s product works on smartphones and, in hands-free mode, through Meta AI glasses. A construction worker can point the camera at an element being installed and ask whether it has been installed correctly, whether the connection meets the required torque, and whether it complies with building codes.

According to Wu, the system can find design specifications, manufacturers’ instructions, and companies’ internal rules in real time. NavigateAI also works with AIM, a training school for fiber-optic installation specialists backed by Meta. The company is working with Meta to certify the glasses for environments where safety glasses are required.

Labor shortage in construction

The round was led by Elad Gil. Investors include Khosla Ventures, Fifth Wall, Lennar, Tishman Speyer, and electrical contractor Helix Electric, as well as DoorDash’s Tony Xu, Instacart’s Apoorva Mehta, and Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong.

According to the industry association Associated Builders and Contractors, the US construction industry needs approximately 349,000 more workers this year to meet demand. Staffing needs are growing, including for large data centers: while a large campus previously required around 750 people at the peak of construction, the largest current projects require between 4,000 and 5,000 workers.

NavigateAI initially used a payment model combining tokens and margin, but is moving in new contracts to a share of the value created for the client. Wu acknowledged that it is difficult to determine precisely the software’s contribution to savings, as construction timelines and costs are also affected by weather, crew composition, and material supplies.
