Scientists have discovered a ring linked to Pontius Pilate
A re-examination of an ancient signet ring found at Herodium may shed new light on the workings of the Roman administration in Judea during the time of Pontius Pilate.
The researcher suggests that the Greek inscription on the artifact may mean “for Pilate” or “to Pilate,” and the ring itself likely belonged to a low-ranking official who worked in the administration of the Roman prefect of Judea.
The copper ring, featuring an image of a vessel and a Greek inscription, was discovered back in the 1960s during archaeological excavations at the Herodion fortress.
For decades, the artifact was stored in a repository until researchers took notice of it again.
In 2018, Israeli scholars suggested that the inscription ΠΙΛΑΤΟ, which is about 2,000 years old, might be connected to Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect of Judea, known primarily from the biblical narrative.
However, this interpretation was later called into question. In a 2023 study, researchers suggested that the letters might form two separate words.
A new study, published in the journal *Palestine Exploration Quarterly*, once again supports the original interpretation of the inscription.
The author of the study, Boneche, believes that it should be viewed as a Greek transliteration of the Latin word *Pilato*.
According to the researcher, the Latin form could have conveyed the meaning “to Pilate” or “for Pilate.”
At the same time, there is a specific orthographic peculiarity on the ring: an omicron is used instead of the Greek omega at the end of the word.
The scholar believes that this does not necessarily indicate a misreading. Such inaccuracies could have arisen due to the local residents’ limited knowledge of Latin.
Furthermore, the similarity between certain Latin and Greek letters could have led to an error during the ring’s manufacture.
The researcher also attributes the unusual arrangement of some symbols to defects in the metal and limited space on the ring’s surface.
The material from which the artifact was made is also significant.
The ring is made of a copper alloy. During the Roman era, such jewelry was typically worn by members of the lower social classes, soldiers, and low-ranking officials.
Wealthy Roman officials, on the other hand, used more expensive signet rings—made of gold or adorned with precious stones.
The artifact also depicts a vessel—a typical Jewish motif for first-century Judea.
Given this, the researcher speculates that the owner may have been a slave or a freedman who worked in the Roman administration.
Perhaps the ring was used to authenticate documents that were submitted to Pontius Pilate.
If this interpretation is correct, the artifact may be significant not only for studying the activities of Pontius Pilate himself.
The ring potentially offers a better understanding of the day-to-day workings of the Roman administration in Judea, particularly the role of local residents and people of low social status.
