On the evening of September 13, 2026, Venus will shine beside the waxing crescent Moon low above the western horizon after sunset. As Space.com reports, the distance between the planet and the Moon will be slightly more than 5 degrees — approximately the width of three middle fingers held at arm’s length.
Observing After Sunset
The illuminated portion of the waxing Moon will be about 9%. Venus will be easy to spot as a bright point in the evening sky, while the thin lunar crescent may be lost in the glow of the setting Sun.
Venus and the Moon will be at an altitude of less than 10 degrees above the horizon. They will be visible for less than an hour after sunset before setting below the horizon. For observation, choose a location with an unobstructed view of the western sky and begin searching immediately after sunset.

Occultation of Venus by the Moon
On September 14, the Moon will pass directly in front of Venus for observers in parts of Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and southern India. According to Space.com, the occultation will begin at 09:26 GMT and will be visible in the daytime sky in these regions.
Near the new Moon, earthshine can also be seen — a faint illumination of the unlit part of the lunar disk by sunlight reflected from Earth. During daytime observations, binoculars or a telescope must not be pointed at the Sun, as this may cause irreversible damage to eyesight.
