The Day of Remembrance for the Defenders of Ukraine Who Died in Captivity is one of the newest commemorative dates on the Ukrainian calendar. It is observed annually on July 28. This day was established to preserve the memory of the military personnel, volunteers, and civilians who fell victim to Russian aggression, were executed, tortured, or died while in captivity.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the resolution establishing this date on July 22, 2025. The initiative arose from the need to specifically honor those whose lives were cut short not only on the battlefield but also at the hands of the enemy after being taken prisoner.

One of the main reasons for establishing this day was the tragedy in Olenivka, Donetsk Oblast. On the night of July 28–29, 2022, an explosion occurred in the building of the former Volnovakha correctional colony, where Ukrainian prisoners of war were being held after their evacuation from the Azovstal plant. Ukraine called this a terrorist attack carried out by Russian troops. As a result of the tragedy, dozens of Ukrainian defenders were killed, and many people were injured.

However, this day is not only dedicated to the memory of those who died in Olenivka. It also serves as a reminder of all Ukrainians who died in captivity during the Russian-Ukrainian war. Among them are servicemen from various units, members of volunteer formations, and civilians from the occupied territories.

During Russia’s full-scale invasion, thousands of Ukrainians were taken captive. Many released servicemembers have spoken of torture, inhumane conditions of detention, and psychological pressure. Ukraine and international organizations have repeatedly denounced Russia’s violations of international humanitarian law regarding prisoners of war.

The main purpose of this commemorative date is not only to remember those who died but also to draw attention to those who remain in Russian captivity. For their families, this day serves as a reminder of the struggle to bring every Ukrainian home.

How This Day Is Observed

On the Day of Remembrance for Those Who Died in Captivity, memorial events are held throughout Ukraine. People visit memorial sites, lay flowers, light candles, and honor the fallen with a moment of silence. Ceremonies may also be held with the participation of families of prisoners of war, military personnel, and government officials. Among the traditions of this day are:

• a moment of silence in honor of the fallen;
• the reading of the names of those who did not return from captivity;
• laying flowers at memorials;
• wearing black ribbons as a symbol of mourning;
• sharing stories about the fallen so that their names are remembered. 

The stories of the defenders themselves and their families are particularly significant. Through the memories of their loved ones, society learns not only about the circumstances of their deaths but also about their lives, personalities, dreams, and contributions to the defense of Ukraine.
