A Red List vulture flew from Berlin to the Kyiv region, where it was rescued
A black vulture named Berlin, which was released into the wild in Germany as part of a population restoration program, flew as far as the Kyiv region, where it was injured. The bird was rescued by Kyiv-based birdwatcher Ihor Samokhin.
According to him, the vulture is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the “Nyushanik Estate.”
The wound on its leg is gradually healing; the bird is active and eating well, but treatment will continue for at least another two weeks.
Berlin was raised at the Berlin Zoo, and in May he was released into the wild with a GPS tracker. The bird had already flown through Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine, but near Bila Tserkva, he was injured and ended up in a reed bed, from which he was unable to escape on his own.
Once he has recovered, experts plan to return the vulture to the wild. Most likely, he will be sent to Bulgaria, where there are colonies of black vultures and he will be able to find a mate.
