A former battalion commander is suspected of paying more than 1.5 million hryvnias to a soldier who never served
A former battalion commander at a military unit in Zakarpattia has been notified of charges for aiding a female subordinate in evading military service. According to the investigation, the woman failed to perform her duties for nearly two years but continued to receive her pay.
According to law enforcement, the commander knew that the soldier was not at the unit’s temporary deployment location, yet he allowed her to skip duty and concealed her absence from higher command. At the same time, the soldier periodically visited the unit, creating the appearance of active duty.
The investigation established that the 31-year-old soldier unjustifiably received a salary and additional payments totaling more than 1.5 million hryvnias.
The prosecutor’s office noted that the violations were uncovered during the investigation of another criminal case involving the former commander. He had previously been accused of extorting illegal benefits from military personnel in exchange for not sending them to the combat zone.
The former commander and the female soldier have been notified of the charges against them, and a motion has been filed with the court to impose pretrial measures on them.
