Kyivstar has completely phased out 3G for its subscribers
Kyivstar, one of Ukraine’s largest mobile operators, has completed the mass phase-out of 3G technology. More than 1 million of the company’s subscribers have already switched to the faster 4G network.
Kyivstar is the first in Ukraine to completely phase out 3G technology from widespread use. More than 1 million subscribers have switched to 4G, and the freed-up spectrum will be fully allocated to the development of the LTE network.
For a small number of B2B customers, 3G service is temporarily maintained locally due to the specific location of their equipment. The transition of these sites to 4G is scheduled to be completed in the near future. Meanwhile, the technology is no longer available to consumers.
As a result, the resources available for 4G have increased by 25%—this has made it possible to improve the speed and stability of mobile services.
The main reason for phasing out 3G was the significantly higher efficiency of 4G compared to 3G.
According to the Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), operators worldwide are gradually phasing out this technology, with European countries leading the way.
Kyivstar began a phased rollback of 3G as early as 2023 across all regions of Ukraine.
Another key outcome of the project was the reallocation of 20 MHz in the 2100 MHz band to 4G. Now, the entire frequency spectrum of this band is dedicated to the development of the 4G network.
In addition, according to the company, this reallocation is expected to increase data transmission speeds on the operator’s network by 20–40%, depending on location.
