"Mathematics must remain a required subject on the National Multidisciplinary Test," says Svyrydenko

During her speech at the "Education of the New Ukraine 2.0" conference, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko categorically rejected the possibility of removing mathematics from the list of required subjects on the National Multidisciplinary Test (NMT). 

The head of government called the debate surrounding this issue strange and assured that the structure of the test would not change next year or in the future, as simplifying the exams could have negative consequences for the country’s future. 

The Prime Minister emphasized that mathematics testing is strictly conducted within the framework of current school curricula and is a basic task that graduates are capable of solving. She added that she understands young people’s desire for easier exam conditions, but it is precisely mathematical knowledge that lays the foundation necessary for the future generation to successfully rebuild Ukraine and conduct business. Public discussion of this issue intensified after MP Yulia Hryshyna proposed removing mathematics from the list of mandatory subjects for the National Multidisciplinary Test (NMT); however, the Ministry of Education and Science and government leadership do not support this idea.

An alternative bill to change the format of the National Multidisciplinary Test (NMT) has been registered in the Verkhovna Rada. The document proposes reducing the number of subjects to be tested from four to three. In this case, mathematics would become an elective subject.
