Schools in the Lviv region are being advised to limit the use of electronic devices

The head of the Lviv Region’s Department of Education recommends that schools ban the use of electronic devices during class. At the same time, each school will decide independently whether to implement such restrictions.

Schools in Lviv Oblast plan to ban the use of electronic devices during classes and recess. Oleg Paska, director of the Lviv Regional State Administration’s Department of Education and Science, signed the corresponding order.

As Oleg Paska wrote on his Facebook page on September 30, Ukraine leads Europe in the amount of time teenagers spend on their phones: about 30% of students spend more than 6 hours a day on their phones.

“We in the Department of Education and Science have long been working to limit the use of cell phones and other electronic devices capable of transmitting information over a distance. We’ve worked with student government representatives, consulted with teachers, principals, and education department heads, and studied the experiences of other countries. We’ve taken a very measured approach to this. And finally, we have a document! An order approving the main proposed changes to the rules in every school,” noted the chief education official of Lviv Oblast.

The list of rules from the methodological recommendations is reviewed at each school during meetings of the student parliament and the parent committee and is approved at a meeting of the faculty council. Afterward, the school principal issues the corresponding order.

According to Oleg Paska, the guidelines prohibit the use of electronic devices during class and recess. Their use is permitted in extreme cases, such as an air raid alert or a student’s illness. In addition, the use of gadgets is permitted at the teacher’s instruction for educational purposes. Video or audio recording of participants in the educational process is prohibited.

“Now we’re counting on communities and schools to implement all of this by October 30. We have one month! We are counting on the support and understanding of parents and students. Ukraine will be strong when its youth develop, become smarter, and grow stronger,” added Oleg Paska.

As a reminder, the advance payment received for September sparked widespread outrage among teachers.
