A case of monkeypox in a man has been confirmed in the Vinnytsia region
In the Vinnytsia region, an adult man has been laboratory-confirmed to have monkeypox (mpox). The reference laboratory of the Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine confirmed the diagnosis.
“The reference laboratory of the Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine has confirmed a case of monkeypox (mpox) in an adult male in the Vinnytsia region. The case is linked to a trip to European countries where this infection has been reported in recent years. There are no signs of the infection spreading in Ukraine,” the statement reads.
It is noted that genetic sequencing showed that the virus belongs to clade Ib—a variant detected in EU countries. This pathogen is not new and is well known: diagnostic tests, clinical protocols, and a vaccine are available for it.
The patient has a mild case of the disease, is self-isolating, and is receiving outpatient treatment.
The Vinnytsia Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention conducted an epidemiological investigation and identified the circle of contacts who may have come into contact with the patient.
Medical monitoring will be organized for these contacts for 21 days from the date of their last contact with the patient. The patient has received recommendations regarding self-isolation and personal hygiene.
The Public Health Center, in collaboration with the Vinnytsia Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention, continues epidemiological surveillance.
As previously reported, the monkeypox virus is not transmitted through the air, water, food, public transportation, or casual contact with people on the street or in a store.
The virus is transmitted primarily through close, direct contact with an infected person, particularly through contact with affected skin areas, bodily fluids, and contaminated objects such as bedding, towels, clothing, etc. A significant proportion of cases are associated with close physical contact, including sexual contact.
The incubation period lasts from 5 to 21 days, most commonly 6–16 days.
