The school year in Ukraine will begin on September 1
The new 2026/2027 school year in Ukraine will begin on schedule—on September 1—despite Russian attacks on educational institutions, printing presses, and textbook warehouses. This was announced by Minister of Education and Science Andriy Butenko.
According to him, more than 25,000 educational institutions will be operating this year. Currently, more than 11,300 schools have shelters, covering about 80% of students. Construction is also underway on 113 shelters and 18 underground kindergartens, and 7,522 school buses are already in operation, with another 610 being procured.
“Despite Russian attacks on educational institutions, printing plants, and textbook warehouses, classes will begin on time,” Butenko emphasized.
The minister also announced that starting September 1, teachers’ salaries will increase by another 20%, and scholarships will double. Nearly 3 million schoolchildren will receive free hot meals, and 150 academic lyceums will be the first to join the pilot project for specialized upper-secondary schools.

An alternative bill to change the format of the National Multidisciplinary Test (NMT) has been registered in the Verkhovna Rada. The bill proposes reducing the number of subjects to be tested from four to three. In this case, mathematics would be an elective subject.
