An abandoned farm in the Chernobyl Nature Reserve has become home to feral cows

The Chernobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve has shown feral cows that have settled on the grounds of a former farm.  According to reserve officials, the animals roam freely throughout the reserve, find their own food and water, stay together, and choose their own resting places.

The cows use the old farm buildings as shelter during bad weather. This is especially noticeable in the fall, when it gets colder, rains more frequently, and the wind picks up.

At such times, the animals take shelter behind walls, under roofs, or in other protected areas on the former farm’s grounds. There, they wait out the bad weather before returning to the pastures.

The nature reserve noted that the place where people once worked and the farm was once operated has now effectively become part of the wild animals’ habitat.

“People have left. The farm has been abandoned. But life remains—it just looks completely different now,” the statement reads.
