The SBU uncovered an FSB spy ring that was coordinating attacks on Kramatorsk
The Counterintelligence Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine has neutralized yet another spy network of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) in the Donetsk region.
As part of a special operation, law enforcement officers exposed three FSB agents who were passing on the coordinates of the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the Kramatorsk area to the Russians. The enemy used the information to adjust its shelling.
The suspects operated independently of one another but had a single handler from the FSB’s military counterintelligence—a militant from Russian armed groups fighting on the eastern front.
According to the case file, the enemy cell consisted of a saleswoman who worked at a market in Kramatorsk, her acquaintance who had left for Russia and begun working for the FSB, and a local day laborer.
It was established that to recruit the saleswoman, the FSB enlisted her acquaintance, who was located in the aggressor country. After being recruited, the suspect covertly elicited intelligence information from customers, particularly from military personnel. She also “inquired” about the locations of defensive structures and firing positions of the Ukrainian artillery.
As for the other member of the spy ring, he turned out to be a handyman from the suburbs of a regional center. He came to the attention of the Russians when he posted anti-Ukrainian comments on “Odnoklassniki.”
It has been documented how the suspect tracked the locations of fortified areas and other places where Defense Forces personnel were concentrated for the FSB.
To maintain his cover, the suspect left his home only for short periods and used his knowledge of the area to chart covert routes for reconnaissance missions.
SBU officers secured the locations of Ukrainian troops in advance and detained both agents at their residences. During searches, computer equipment and cell phones containing evidence of subversive activities were seized from them.
Investigators from the Security Service informed the agents that they were suspected of treason.
The suspects are being held in custody without the right to bail. They face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Investigative actions regarding a third member of the spy network, who is in hiding in Russia, are ongoing. A notice of suspicion is currently being prepared for her as part of a special pretrial investigation.
